CULTURAL STEREOTYPES AMONG STUDENTS REFLECTED THROUGH LINGUISTIC USAGE

Abstract:

A stereotype is assumed to be an exaggerated belief related to a category of social group which is normally built on the lack of information towards a culture or a person being stereotyped. Its belief functions to rationalize the conduct, known to be relatively problematic, linked to that classification. This article thus examines the stereotypes of the students attributed to other students coming from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds in CCU (Cross-Cultural Understanding) class, English Letters Department, at University of Trunojoyo Madura. The current investigation involves two major races, Madurese and Javanese. By employing interview and distributing questionnaire (stereotype worksheet) approaches in collecting the data, the research demonstrates both love and hate-stereotypes, including typical similarities for both cultures. In other words, positive as well as negative stereotypes also present to each race. As a recommendation, communicating the personal perceptions towards a particular group of people can be a mile stone as to social problems mostly rooted on the hate-stereotypes in particular, can be minimized and multicultural awareness can finally be flourished.
